The First Annual Fashion Forward event was a stylish success. Local high school students showed off their gowns created for the Junior League of Las Vegas’ Paint the Town Red Gala. Using some variation of red, each student created a gown for under $100 in materials. Five judges from the fashion industry evaluated each gown and the winners were:

First Place Fashion Forward winner Ruth, a junior, second year Fashion student is also a varsity volleyball player and PAL student. Her dress of bordeaux colored satin and cost around $72 to make. She improvised a couple of parts of this fully lined gown to get it "just right." Ruth hopes to be a hair and makeup stylist someday and plans to attend cosmetology school upon graduation.

Second place Fashion Forward winner Lissette, a third-year fashion student, a high school senior and two-time winner who wants to go into photography upon graduation. She is frequently found helping others while neglecting her own projects. Lissette is considered by many of her peers to be a top contender in any fashion competition. Her Badgley Mishka Advanced Vogue pattern consisted of 30 pattern pieces which translated into approximately 50 different pieces of fabric sewn into the dress. Ironically, it wasn't the sewing but the cutting that was the most difficult part. Lissette's dress cost around $75 to create.

Third place Fashion Forward winner Breana, a junior and second year Fashion student, won both the People's Choice and Judge's Choice awards for first challenge of the year, the "Teacher Challenge." She enjoys sewing as a hobby, and plans to be an elementary school teacher after completing college. Breana's crepe merlot colored dress features a high collar, empire waistline and chiffon over bodice cost $50 to create.

First place Recycle/Reuse winner Eunice, a second year Fashion student, won both the People's and the Judge's Choice Awards for the "Reuse and Recycle Challenge." The class considers her one of our "Ninja Seamstresses" that you wonder one day if she is going to end up with anything, and the next day she has an entire dress. After graduation, Eunice hopes to continue her fashion education and work in the industry someday.
